Coffee Table Header

This was just my third woodworking project I attempted. Designed to be simple, both visually and to construct, with an emphasis on a two-tone color scheme. Built in my parents Grayslake house using a pretty crappy setup as described in Platform Bed.

Notes:

  • Sketched out the design in a notebook.
  • The top is made from brazilian walnut, the legs from red oak. Bought material from woodworkers source. They delivered quality boards, but shipping costs are pretty out of control (as expected). Brazilian walnut was a dumb choice - no better than domestic black walnut.
  • Leg assemblies are held together with 3/4 in dowels. The connectors between the two legs are secured with pocket hole screws. Would have been better to use mortise and tenons, but that was out of my skill set at the time.
  • Finished with a water based poly, which was a disaster. Left horrible streaks and a texture that felt like a sticky bar top. Ended up sanding off and refinishing 5 years later in 2020 with Arm-R-Seal satin, and it looks much better.
  • This is the first project that has stood the test of time. 8 years later (after refinishing), it still looks great and is extremely functional.
