This was just the second woodworking project I attempted. Built in my parents Grayslake house using a pretty crappy setup as described in Platform Bed.
Notes:
- Constructed out of oak boards from the big box store, left over plywood, and left over oak flooring.
- The top of the desk is just a piece of plywood with hardwood flooring attached. Added a piece of trim to cover up the plywood edge.
- Glued up the legs from 1” stock.
- The leg assemblies are joined with pocket hole screws, and the legs protrude through the top of the surface. Not one of my best ideas.
- Had to sand the factory finish off the oak flooring so I could stain it with a consistent color. Took a long time, even with a belt sander and low grit snad paper.
- The front apron turned out to interfere with the desk chair, so I ended up modifying it to move it to a secondary brace between the back legs.
This desk didn’t turn out very well. Its sturdy and functional, but full of mistakes nad not visually pleasing. I chalk it up as a learning experience. We keep it as a secondary desk and craft surface.
